Behaviour Support Practitioner
An NDIS worker who designs and reviews behaviour support plans; must be considered suitable by the NDIS Commission.
A Behaviour Support Practitioner works with NDIS participants who may display behaviours of concern, assessing what is driving those behaviours and designing positive behaviour support plans that reduce the need for restrictive practices over time. They also review and update those plans, and work closely with the participant, their family and the support team putting the plan into practice.
To deliver these services, a practitioner must be considered suitable by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. The Commission assesses a person's qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience against the positive behaviour support capability framework, rather than issuing a single fixed licence. Practitioners also need the usual disability sector screening, including an NDIS Worker Screening Check, which itself includes a police history check rather than a separate one.
For disability workers moving towards this role, keeping your suitability evidence, screening and qualifications organised matters, because providers need to confirm them before you can deliver behaviour support. A Career Passport keeps these records together so a new provider can review them quickly.
This is general information, not compliance advice. Always confirm requirements with the relevant regulator, and remember that providers keep the legal responsibility to sight credentials and decide who can work.
We work hard to keep it accurate, but the rules change and we will not always get every detail right. If you think something here needs updating, email us at resources@koora.care. We would genuinely rather know, because we all do better when we help each other get it right.
