How to apply: Teacher accreditation (NSW)

  1. Hold a completed ACECQA-approved early childhood teaching qualification, or equivalent.
  2. Get a NSW Working with Children Check clearance for paid employment first. NESA does not accept other states' clearances.
  3. Apply to NESA and consent to a nationally coordinated criminal history check. Most first-time applications with Australian qualifications are processed within 10 business days.
  4. If you are first accredited between 15 September and 31 December, you do not pay that calendar year's $100 fee.
  5. A Birth to 5 qualification, or one of less than four years, may bring provisional accreditation with a condition that allows teaching in centre-based early childhood services but not in schools.

How to renew: Teacher accreditation (NSW)

  1. Pay the $100 annual fee each calendar year.
  2. Complete at least 100 hours of professional development in each maintenance period: five years full-time or seven years part-time or casual.
  3. Keep your NSW WWCC current. It is a condition of remaining accredited.
  4. Not paying the fee puts your accreditation at risk of suspension, and NESA may cancel accreditation suspended for 12 months or more for non-payment.

What employers must do

  • Ensure every teacher you employ is actively accredited to teach in NSW.
  • Early childhood employers nominate at least one Teacher Accreditation Delegate to manage accreditation in their services.
  • Have internal procedures for supporting teachers to gain and maintain Proficient Teacher accreditation.
  • Notify NESA of teacher misconduct and of grounds for suspending or revoking accreditation.

What is specific to New South Wales

  • NSW calls registration 'accreditation'. Proficient Teacher is the level every teacher must reach and maintain; Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher are voluntary.
  • A NSW WWCC for paid employment is mandatory, and NESA does not accept other states' clearances.
  • The Public Register shows a teacher's name, NESA accreditation number and active accreditation type. Teachers on leave of absence do not appear.

What Koora checks

Verified by Koora, point-in-time. Koora checks the registration number against the NESA Public Register when the credential reaches Koora's review: when a worker shares their Career Passport, when a provider requests access, or across an organisation's own records where Crew is attached. The result is recorded with its date, so it is a point-in-time verification, and Koora tracks the expiry date. Koora does not monitor the registration between checks. A teaching qualification on its own is reviewed, never verified: the degree is not the registration.

Your team reviews each credential in Koora, or Crew does it for you. The provider keeps the legal responsibility for who they engage.
