  1. Decide whether you need it: registration is voluntary for early childhood teachers in education and care services today, though some employers ask for it, and it is mandatory to teach in a school.

  4. New teachers start on provisional registration, which lasts two years and can be extended to four with annual fee payments.

How to renew: Teacher registration (QLD)

  1. Pay the $107.64 annual fee each year.
  2. Complete at least 20 hours of continuing professional development each year in which you teach 20 days or more.

What employers must do

  • Education and care services have no registration duty today: QCT does not require registration for early childhood teachers in those settings.
  • If the Education Legislation (Registration of Early Childhood Teachers) Amendment Bill 2026 passes, from 1 July 2028 a centre-based service must not employ a person as an early childhood teacher unless they are registered, with a maximum penalty of 200 penalty units.
  • Schools must ensure only approved teachers teach and make mandatory notifications to QCT.
  • Check the Register of Teachers when engaging a registered teacher: it shows an up-to-the-minute status.

What is specific to Queensland

  • The 2026 Bill also adds an education and care services condition for teachers registered on an early childhood qualification, allowing them to teach in services but not schools.
  • Registration does not replace the blue card system in an early childhood service: a registered teacher does not need a blue card to teach in a school, but working at a childcare centre they apply for a free blue card exemption card.

What Koora checks

Verified by Koora, point-in-time. Koora checks the registration number against the QCT Register of Teachers when the credential reaches Koora's review: when a worker shares their Career Passport, when a provider requests access, or across an organisation's own records where Crew is attached. The result is recorded with its date, so it is a point-in-time verification, and Koora tracks the expiry date. Koora does not monitor the registration between checks. A teaching qualification on its own is reviewed, never verified: the degree is not the registration.

Your team reviews each credential in Koora, or Crew does it for you. The provider keeps the legal responsibility for who they engage.
