How to apply: Teacher registration (WA)
- Check you need it: early childhood teachers at an education and care service must register. Certificate III and Diploma educators do not, unless employed as an early childhood teacher.
- Apply to the TRBWA and consent to a national criminal history check through the ACIC.
- Hold a WWC Card as well. Teacher registration does not replace the Working with Children Check in WA, so an early childhood teacher needs both.
- Pay $140 for provisional or $178 for full registration with an Australian or New Zealand qualification.
- If you have not finished your qualification, your employer applies for Limited Registration on your behalf ($235, paid by the employer).
- Most applications are processed within ten weeks.
How to renew: Teacher registration (WA)
- Pay the $95 annual fee by 31 March each year.
- Renew full registration every five years, applying at least 28 days before it expires and paying the $56 renewal fee.
- Complete 100 hours of professional learning since your last grant or renewal (60 hours for provisional). There is no pro-rata for relief teachers.
What employers must do
- Do not employ, appoint, engage or permit anyone to teach unless they are registered. Penalties reach $5,000 for a first offence and $10,000 for a repeat offence.
- Notify the Board within seven days when a teacher is dismissed, suspended, resigns or stops teaching after suspected serious misconduct or serious incompetence. The penalty is $5,000.
- Use TRIP, the Board's login service, for registration expiry dates: the public register does not show them.
What is specific to Western Australia
- WA has four registration categories: Full, Provisional, Non-Practising and Limited. Limited Registration is applied for by the employer.
- The public Register of Teachers is live but does not show expiry dates.
- WA has a five-year exemption from automatic deemed registration for teaching.
What Koora checks
Verified by Koora, point-in-time. Koora checks the registration number against the TRBWA Register of Teachers when the credential reaches Koora's review: when a worker shares their Career Passport, when a provider requests access, or across an organisation's own records where Crew is attached. The result is recorded with its date, so it is a point-in-time verification, and Koora tracks the expiry date. Koora does not monitor the registration between checks. A teaching qualification on its own is reviewed, never verified: the degree is not the registration.
Your team reviews each credential in Koora, or Crew does it for you. The provider keeps the legal responsibility for who they engage.

This is general information, not compliance advice. Always confirm requirements with the relevant regulator, and remember that providers keep the legal responsibility to sight credentials and decide who can work.
We work hard to keep everything accurate, and our compliance engine keeps up with the rules as they change. Even so, we might get a detail slightly wrong or miss something. No one's perfect.
