How to apply: Teacher registration (NT)

  1. Check you are covered: qualified teachers in preschools, long day care, early learning centres and any approved early childhood service delivering education programs.
  2. Hold a current Ochre Card (the NT Working with Children Clearance) and a National Police Check. If your Ochre Card is revoked, the Board cancels your registration.
  3. Apply to TRB NT before September 2027. Registration became mandatory in September 2026 with a one-year transition.
  4. Allow up to six weeks for processing.

How to renew: Teacher registration (NT)

  1. Renew full registration for up to five years.
  2. Show 100 days of teaching practice and at least 100 hours of professional development in the preceding five years, and complete a criminal history check.
  3. A registration that lapses needs a new application.

What employers must do

  • Ensure all relevant teaching staff hold the appropriate registration, and support them through the transition to September 2027.
  • Notify TRB NT of employment changes. Notifications such as a dismissal, or the start or end of a serious misconduct matter, are due within 28 days.
  • From September 2027 it is an offence to employ an unregistered early childhood teacher in a teaching role.

What is specific to Northern Territory

  • The Teacher Registration (Northern Territory) Act 2004 was amended in 2025 to include early childhood teachers.
  • The public register shows name, registration number and expiry date. Its description still refers to Northern Territory schools.
  • An Ochre Card is required for early childhood teacher applications, and a revoked Ochre Card leads the Board to cancel registration.

What Koora checks

Verified by Koora, point-in-time. Koora checks the registration number against the TRB NT register search when the credential reaches Koora's review: when a worker shares their Career Passport, when a provider requests access, or across an organisation's own records where Crew is attached. The result is recorded with its date, so it is a point-in-time verification, and Koora tracks the expiry date. Koora does not monitor the registration between checks. A teaching qualification on its own is reviewed, never verified: the degree is not the registration.

Your team reviews each credential in Koora, or Crew does it for you. The provider keeps the legal responsibility for who they engage.
