Infection prevention and control (IPC)

Training in preventing the spread of infection; standard mandatory training across care settings.

Infection prevention and control, often shortened to IPC, is training in how to stop infections spreading between the people you support, yourself and your colleagues. It usually covers hand hygiene, using personal protective equipment like gloves and masks, cleaning and waste handling, and recognising when someone may be unwell. In Aged Care it became especially prominent after the pandemic, and many providers now treat it as core induction training.

For hands-on roles across Aged Care, disability and childcare, IPC is one of the most common mandatory training modules a provider will expect you to complete and refresh. As with most mandatory training, each provider sets its own content and refresh schedule based on its work health and safety and quality obligations, rather than a single national standard.

For care workers, having current infection control training ready to show means a provider can roster you sooner. Keeping it on your Career Passport with your other training records saves you repeating the same module each time you move to a new provider, and helps the provider meet its own compliance obligations.

This is general information, not compliance advice. Always confirm requirements with the relevant regulator, and remember that providers keep the legal responsibility to sight credentials and decide who can work.

We work hard to keep it accurate, but the rules change and we will not always get every detail right. If you think something here needs updating, email us at resources@koora.care. We would genuinely rather know, because we all do better when we help each other get it right.
