Building in the open

Building in the open: what we're learning, and what we don't know yet

An honest field note from a pre-launch company: what we're hearing from care workers and providers, and the questions we're still working through.

2 min read

This is a field note, not a finished story. Koora is pre-launch, and we are building in the open, which means sharing what we are learning as we learn it, including the parts we have not figured out.

What we keep hearing

We have spent time talking to care workers and providers across Aged Care, disability and childcare. These are genuine discovery conversations, not testimonials, and we are paraphrasing themes rather than quoting anyone. A few patterns came up again and again.

From workers:

  • "Every new provider, I start from scratch." The same documents, submitted over and over.
  • "My reputation doesn't follow me." Years of good work, invisible the moment they change employer.
  • People who work across more than one provider, or more than one sector, feel this most.

From providers:

  • "Verification is basically a full-time job." Hours per hire, chasing and checking.
  • "We get most of our workers through referrals. We don't need another job board." What they need is faster, trustworthy review of people they have already found.
  • "The compliance risk keeps me up at night." One lapsed credential is a real liability.

What struck us most was that workers did not just want convenience. They wanted their experience to count. That is a dignity issue as much as an efficiency one.

What we're fairly sure about

  • The verification burden is real, expensive, and universal across the sectors we have looked at.
  • Workers want portability more than we expected.
  • Positioning Koora as a Career Passport that pre-clears credentials, rather than another marketplace, fits how providers actually hire.

What we're still working out

We would rather be honest about the open questions than pretend we have them solved:

  • Sequencing. Verification clearly comes first. Recognition of good work matters too, but adding it too early risks doing nothing well.
  • Where the pull is sharpest. We are building across Aged Care, Disability and Childcare from the start, so the live question for us is not which sector to launch in, it is where the immediate pull is strongest. The National Early Childhood Worker Register has just come into effect, and it has created a concrete pain point: childcare providers have to respond now, not eventually, and Koora is well placed to help them do that. If the new Aged Care worker register lands in the second half of the year, another wave of urgency arrives. We would rather follow the real pain than pretend the picture is fixed.
  • The pace of trust. How quickly providers come to rely on a reviewed Career Passport, rather than re-checking everything themselves, is something we will learn by doing.

Why we're sharing this

Building in the open is partly accountability and partly an invitation. If you work in care, or run a service, and we have something wrong, we want to hear it. The whole point of starting from genuine conversations is to keep having them. More notes as we learn.

This is general information, not compliance advice. Always confirm requirements with the relevant regulator, and remember that providers keep the legal responsibility to sight credentials and decide who can work.

We work hard to keep it accurate, but the rules change and we will not always get every detail right. If you think something here needs updating, email us at resources@koora.care. We would genuinely rather know, because we all do better when we help each other get it right.
